Glens hit 11 in cup rout

Glentoran 11-0 Oxford United Stars

Glentoran broke their post-war scoring record in the Irish Cup by hammering Oxford United Stars at the Oval.

Darren Armour scored four as the Glens simply overpowered the minnows from the North-West Intermediate League.

There were two goals each for Scott Young, Michael O'Neill and Andy Smith with substitute Marty Hunter grabbing one in the landslide victory.

Oxford replaced their goalkeeper Niall Walker with the score at 7-0.

But experienced substitute keeper Eamonn Gallagher fared no better as Glentoran scored three in a five-minute spell on their way to that record tally.

The Oxford United Stars players received an ovation from the Oval crowd at the end and were praised for their attitude by Glentoran boss Roy Coyle.

"They tried to play football. They did not come here and attempt to kick us off the pitch," said Coyle.

"These kind of games can be difficult because you are expected to win.

"It is difficult to get any credit but it was nice to see our strikers continue their good run.

"Darren Armour will be pleased with the service he received. I thought Scott Young and Michael O'Neill ran the show in midfield."
