Garcia holds off Harrington
Sergio Garcia in action at Wentworth
Garcia was four down in the morning session

Fourth seed Sergio Garcia held off a late challenge from Padraig Harrington to claim a tense 2&1 victory in the World Match Play Championship.

It was an impressive win for Garcia after he had battled back from four down to trail by just two at the halfway mark.

That recovery inspired the Spaniard in the afternoon and he took a three-hole lead at the 30th with his sixth birdie of the day.

But Harrington, last year's beaten finalist, never gave up.

He birdied the 33rd and 34th to reduce the deficit to one before Garcia sealed victory with a hole to spare.

The Spaniard said afterwards that he had never given up hope.

"I tried to keep positive," he said.

"I had to keep giving myself chances. The eagle at 18 gave me courage to go harder in the afternoon."

Harrington was philosophical in defeat.

"I just didn't play well enough," said the Irishman.

"I played poorly the last two days - you get weeks like that."
