  • Ernie Els was the star of the day as he comfortably saw off Scotland's Colin Montgomerie 6&5 in the quarter-finals.

    The South African shot a 60 in the morning session to take a four-hole lead at lunch, and he showed no sign of letting slip in the afternoon as he booked his place in the last four.

    New Zealand's Michael Campbell joined Els in the semi-finals with a 3&2 win over defending champion Ian Woosnam.

    Vijay Singh overcame Retief Goosen 5&3, while Sergio Garcia was a 2&1 winner over Padraig Harrington.


    Major incidents as they happen:

    1641: Harrington sends his tee-shot at the 17th out of play and is forced to take three off the tee. His third shot is well right and it looks all over for the Irishman. He manages to play his fourth to within sight of the green, but Garcia is even closer in two and Harrington calls it a day.

    1637: Garcia sees his 20ft birdie putt catch the edge of the hole and stay out, while Harrington makes no mistake with his to narrow the gap even further.

    1632: Harrington puts his second shot close to the hole on the 16th, while Garcia can only find the middle of the green.

    1627: Goosen, who needs to win the 15th to keep the match alive, finds trouble off the tee and is unable to find the green with his third shot. He concedes the hole and the match to Singh.

    1624: Harrington plays a fine second shot into the 15th green and holes his short birdie putt to reduce Garcia's lead to two holes with three to play.

    1620: Singh gets his birdie at the 14th and Goosen is unable to make his long putt and the Fijian moves to 4up with four to play.

    1617: Els looks like completing his victory on the 13th and a disconsolate Montgomerie ends his misery by conceding the hole and the match.

    1612: Singh plays a beautiful tee-shot at the 14th that spins back to within a few feet of the hole. Goosen finds the middle of the green and looks like slipping further behind.

    1608: Garcia misses the green on the 14th but plays a beautiful chip shot to within inches of the hole for his par. Harrington

    1606: Els sees his eagle putt on the 12th slide by and Montgomerie fails to take advantage as he misses an even closer effort.

    1555: Singh misses his short eagle putt and leaves himself a difficult birdie putt, while Montgomerie's woes go on as he misses another chance to pull a hole back.

    1551: Goosen plays another loose approach shot into the 12th green and Singh piles the pressure on as he plays a long iron to within six feet of the hole.

    1548: Harrington has a short putt for birdie on 12th but knocks it well past. Garcia makes no mistake with his birdie putt to move to 3up with six holes to play.

    1543: Goosen can only manage a five at the 11th, allowing Singh to move to 3up with a par.

    1540: Woosnam holes from long range for a birdie at the 16th, but Campbell sinks from four feet to put out the defending champion.

    1539: Montgomerie has a long putt to pull one back at the ninth, but the Scot puts it well past the hole and three-putts to fall further behind.

    1530: Woosnam is unable to find the green on the 15th and Campbell has a putt to win the match. The New Zealander misses it but goes to the 16th 3up with just three to play.

    1521: Campbell holes from eight feet for a birdie two at the short 14th and Woosnam can only make par as the defending champion slips three behind.

    1520: Singh misses the green to the right at the ninth and can only manage a bogey, but Goosen misses his chance to pull a hole back.

    1514: Montgomerie knocks in a birdie at the seventh hole, but he is unable to close the gap as Els follows him in for a three.

    1513: Garcia goes two in front when he birdies the par-four ninth hole and Harrington can only manage par.

    1506: Montgomerie gets one back when Els can do no better than bogey at the sixth.

    1502: Woosnam finds trouble at the 12th when his second shot hits the trees and leaves him with a difficult lie. He is unable to recover and Campbell moves 2up.

    1459: Goosen sinks a birdie putt at the seventh to pull one back on Singh, who then responds by hitting the hole on his approach on the eighth.

    1458: Garcia almost goes into the water on the eighth but the ball stops just short. He plays a fine approach into the green but sees his birdie putt lip out and Harrington remains just one hole down.

    1453: Woosnam plays a wonderful chip to five feet after finding problems, but he sees his putt go in and come out as Campbell moves back in front.

    1451: Montgomerie has the chance to pull one back, but he misses from close range and sees Els knock in his par putt to halve the hole.

    1446: Garcia goes ahead in his match with Harrington for the first time with a birdie at the seventh.

    1445: Singh holes from long range from his fifth birdie in a row, while Goosen misses his chance to halve the hole and falls three behind.

    1442: Els gives himself a chance for eagle while Montgomerie finds trouble at the fourth and is forced to concede and slip to five holes behind.

    1437: Woosnam has a putt for an outward nine of 29 but sees it lip out and he is forced to hole from three feet for a par and a half to keep it all square.

    1436: Harrington finds trouble on the sixth and is forced to concede the hole to allow Garcia to square the match.

    1428: Montgomerie finds trouble in the sand to the right of the third green and he is unable to get his par. Els gets his four to go back to 4up.

    1419: Singh gets his second birdie in a row to win the third hole and move into a two-hole lead over Goosen, who can only manage a par.

    1414: Woosnam rolls in another birdie from 12ft on the seventh but Campbell follows him in from six feet to halve the hole.

    1408: Els misses a seven-foot putt to bogey the opening hole and give Montgomerie hope.

    1402: Singh picks up the ninth birdie of the day on the second hole to take the lead for the first time against Goosen.

    1356: Woosnam narrowly misses a 20ft putt for birdie and Campbell takes advantage by holing from seven feet to get back to all square.

    1350: Woosnam is looking in ominous form as he hits his second shot to within eight feet at the fourth and pops it in for an eagle to go to 1up.

    1348: Garcia and Harrington both put their tee-shots at the second close to the pin. The Spaniard rolls in his putt for birdie and the Irishman misses from three-foot to see his lead cut to one hole.

    1340: Harrington and Garcia halve the opening hole of their afternoon session.

    1337: Woosnam continues his march as he fires his second shot at the third hole stone-dead to square his match with Campbell. Woosnam had been four down after 15 holes of the morning session.

    1332: Woosnam holes a 15ft putt to birdie the second and move within one hole of Campbell.

    1323: Michael Campbell misses an eight-foot birdie chance at the first hole as Woosnam remains two holes behind.

    1316: Els narrowly misses his eagle putt at the last which would have given him a round of 59. Montgomerie holes a 20ft putt for birdie and a half as he heads into lunch four down.

    1308: Goosen makes birdie at the last but Singh goes one better with an eagle to win the hole and go into lunch all square.

    1256: Garcia finds the green with his second shot at the last, while Harrington puts his attempt into the bunker. The Irishman gets up and down but Garcia holes his eagle putt to reduce the deficit to two holes.

    1201: Woosnam sees his eagle putt narrowly miss at the 18th and Campbell escapes with a half to preserve his two-shot lead going into the halfway interval.
