Monty sets up Els clash
Fred Funk, beaten by Colin Montgomerie at Wentworth
Funk never showed his best form

Colin Montgomerie (GB) beat Fred Funk (US) 3 & 2

Colin Montgomerie booked his place in the Cisco World Match Play Championship with a comfortable win over American Fred Funk.

Montgomerie, the star of the European Ryder Cup team at The Belfry last month, will play South African Ernie Els in one of Friday's quarter-finals.

In a scrappy match, it was the Scot who played the quality shots, with Funk using his strong putting skills to stay in the match during the first 18 holes.

Monty ended the first 18 holes two up and although Funk managed to reduce that during the afternoon's action, the lead widened during the back nine at the Wentworth West course.

The 46-year-old American, playing in the event for the first time, squared the match after winning both the 19th and 20th holes but then dropped shots on 24 and 26 to hand Monty the lead.

Funk two-putted from 10 feet for another bogey on 27, putting Montgomerie three clear and in charge for the rest of the match.

"I was lucky he happened to miss some crucial putts on six, eight and nine in the afternoon to give me the advantage," said Montgomerie

"Luckily I was able to hang on. It's always nice to win in the first round.

"I look forward to the challenge with Ernie.

"It is always good to play the Open championship. He fears me as much as I fear him. It will be a good game."
