The German, who led the tournament from the start after shooting a course record 60 on day one, almost let it slip when he picked up bogeys at the eighth and 11th holes.
But the 25-year-old carded an eagle at the 12th to move to 17 under par and restore a two-shot cushion. He showed great nerves to finish with six pars and a shot clear of England's Jamie Spence. Spence had eagled the 18th to card a 65 and move to 16 under par, piling the pressure on Dier. But Dier held on and the 25-year-old collected a winner's cheque of 193,000, more than 10 times his earnings for the rest of the year. He had missed the cut in 12 of his last 15 events and admitted he was struggling to come to terms with the win. "I don't really know what to say," said Dier. "If someone had told me I would champion before the week I would have said `Dream on.' It's like a fairytale." Dier's other Tour win came at the North West of Ireland Open last year. "When I won in Ireland I felt very familiar with things because it was a joint event with the Challenge Tour and I knew a lot of the players," he added. "It was a bit different from this week. When you look at the entry sheet you see Retief Goosen, Padraig Harrington, John Daly, so this is a much bigger win for me. "I'm sure my life will change. Last year I was seriously thinking about where the money was coming from for the rest of the season. Off the pace "So the cheque is very welcome, and with the exemption I now have a job for the next two years." Ireland's Harrington was in contention until a bogey at the 15th saw him fall three shots off the pace. A birdie at the final hole saw Harrington share third place with Australia's Peter Lonard. Alastair Forsyth of Scotland shot a 63 to take the early clubhouse lead. He finished alongside England's Ian Poulter and Justin Rose on 12 under par in a tie for sixth, with Jarrod Moseley a shot in front after a 67. England's Nick Faldo broke 70 for the fourth round in a row, his 67 leaving him 10 under par and tied for 13th. |
