Hayes claims course record
Fred Funk
Fred Funk had seven birdies in his round

J.P. Hayes shot a course-record 10-under-par 61 to share the halfway lead at the John Deere Classic with Fred Funk.

The pair are both on 14 under, breaking the 36-hole tournament record.

They have a one shot advantage over Robert Gamez, who went round in 64 with Briny Baird and Nolan Henke in joint fourth on 11-under.

Funk is the highest-ranked player on the PGA Tour money list in the field with many players opting for a break after last week's Open Championship at Muirfield.

I am hungry for a win

Hayes made a slow start but had birdies from the fourth to the seventh before a bogey at the eighth slowed his charge.

He then birdied the first three holes on the back nine and closed with three more on the last four holes.

"It was a lot of fun," Hayes said.

"I felt like I was going to play well but you never expect something like that.

Feeling good

"The putts started going in and I hit the ball probably as good as I hit it yesterday and that made the difference."

Funk, who hasn't won on the PGA Tour since 1998, came close two weeks ago with a second-place finish at the B.C. Open.

"I feel really good coming off such a good week and am really hungry for a win," Funk said.

Funk, who had seven birdies in his round, has not had a bogey in his opening two rounds.
