Hayes captured his second PGA Tour title with a four-stroke victory over Robert Gamez in the John Deere Classic. Hayes shot a final round 67 to finish on an impressive 22 under par for the tournament. After beginning the final round tied for the lead with Gamez at 18 under, Hayes birdied the first two holes to take control. He went on to add birdies at the 11th and 17th, completing a bogey-free round for his first tournament win since the 1998 Buick Classic. Poor start Hayes picked up a cheque for $540,000 for his efforts. Gamez started his final round poorly with a bogey at the second to fall three shots behind Hayes and he never recovered after that. Kirk Triplett closed with a 66 to finish third at 17 under. Pat Perez and Mike Heinen both mounted brief challenges to the lead but both fell back with Perez finishing on 16 under and Heinen another shot back alongside Briny Baird and Chris Riley.
