The history of breakway side AFC Wimbledon begins in earnest on Wednesday night when they play their first match.

The club, set up by fans in protest at Wimbledon's move to Milton Keynes, take on Sutton United in a friendly at Gander Green Lane at 1930 BST.

Director of football Terry Eames has selected a squad of 25 players after holding trials last month and hopes to give most of them a run out.

"There's going to be a party atmosphere at Gander Green Lane," Kris Stewart, chairman of AFC Wimbledon, promised.

"This is about Wimbledon going back to their roots. We hope to attract fans disaffected by the move to Milton Keynes and also those who left the club when they moved away from Plough Lane."

AFC Wimbledon hope to attract a crowd of at least 1,000 to Gander Green Lane.

They will be announcing a major sponsorship deal and showing off their new kit before the match.

AFC Wimbledon, who were formed and are financed by fans, have been admitted to the Combined Counties League and play their first competitive match next month.

Meanwhile, First Division Wimbledon have cancelled a friendly against Carshalton which had also been scheduled for Wednesday night.
