Sherwood claimed Hoddle should stand up to the Spurs board to demand the sort of spending power to mount a Premiership title challenge.

But Hoddle refused to comment on Sherwood's grievances following Spurs' 3-2 defeat in a pre-season friendly at QPR.

Hoddle would have had a few grievances of his own as a Spurs side minus Teddy Sheringham, Darren Anderton, Christian Ziege and Gus Poyet were run ragged by Rangers.

Sherwood claims the club have not put up the money needed to sign top players and believes Spurs are still "a million miles away" from challenging for the Premiership title.

"We are a million miles away from winning the championship," the former England international told the News of the World newspaper.

"No money has been made available to buy the top stars that you need to become genuine challengers.

"I'm talking about players in their prime, at their peak - the ones who can make a difference.

"I can't believe Hoddle knew it would be like this when he took the job, and if he did, then I'm surprised he hasn't been stronger.

"I would certainly be disappointed that a man of his stature and reputation seems willing to accept such a situation.

"I believe that if he is given the free rein that other managers at top clubs are allowed, then he will bring success to Spurs.

"That's why I think Hoddle should be confronting the club's owners and asking for the investment we need."
