| Tuesday, 11 February, 2003, 23:08 GMT Spurs punish Sunderland ![]() Gary Doherty and Tahal El Karkouri challenge Spurs 4-1 Sunderland Tottenham Hotspur continued their domination over Sunderland at White Hart Lane with a comfortable win. The match also represented personal milestones for Teddy Sheringham and Gustavo Poyet who scored their 300th and 50th English league goals in the victory. Although Sunderland had an early chance to take the lead when Michael Proctor, who scored two own goals against Charlton last week, headed wide, it was not long before Spurs took control.
On 13 minutes, Darren Anderton clipped a ball into the area and Poyet made no mistake reaching the half ton in English football. Poyet could have scored another soon after when he found himself through on goal but with only Thomas Sorensen to beat, he hit the side netting. But when Spurs seemed to be cruising, sloppy defensive play allowed the Black Cats back into the match.
Gavin McCann sent in a cross and with the home defence appealing for offside, Kevin Phillips knocked the ball past Kasey Keller. The goal sparked Sunderland into action but it was their goalkeeper Sorensen who kept them in the game, doing well to deny Goran Bunjevcevic when he seemed set to score. But Spurs gained a crucial advantage in first-half injury-time when Gary Doherty, on for the injured Robbie Keane, put his side back in front, heading in from Anderton's cross. Poyet and Anderton both went close at the start of the second half. Poyet sent a half-volley just wide of the target while Anderton found the side netting after Sheringham's through ball.
Doherty went close to claiming his second of the afternoon when he found himself one-on-one with Sorensen but he went for the wrong option by trying to chip the keeper and Sorensen saved. Simon Davies put the result beyond doubt on 67 minutes when he finished off a sweet move with a cool finish.
Anderton's pass was flicked on by Poyet and the young Welshman cut in from the right and struck the ball beyond Sorensen. With Sunderland struggling, Teddy Sheringham put the icing on the cake six minutes from time with a superb header from Anderton's cross. Tottenham: Keller, Carr, Richards, King, Taricco, Davies, Anderton, Poyet (Etherington 74), Bunjevcevic (Freund 76), Sheringham, Keane (Doherty 21).
