West played for Nigeria at the World Cup

English Division One leaders Portsmouth are considering signing Nigerian Taribo West.

Boss Harry Redknapp is eager to add to his playing staff because Nigel Quashie and Arjan de Zeeuw are about to start suspensions.

Former Inter Milan and Derby player West trained with Pompey on Tuesday.

Redknapp said: "Taribo has come over and we've had a chat with him. A deal is a possibility.

"With Arjan De Zeeuw suspended next week against Walsall, we're going to be down to just two defenders.

"We'll be in trouble if we don't get someone in for that game."

West has not played since the World Cup.

He left German side Kaiserslautern after a row with their coach and was poised to sign for Scottish Premier League side Dunfermline.

But the move broke down when the Pars expressed concern about the effect signing West would have on morale at the club.
