Pompey coy on Ravenelli
Derby's Fabrizio Ravanelli
Ravanelli is a proven goalscorer
Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp insists he is "nowhere near" a deal that will bring Derby striker Fabrizio Ravanelli to Fratton Park.

Redknapp's insistence came as Ravanelli's agent Giovanni Palladini confirmed the two clubs have held talks over the future of the former Juventus striker.

We're nowhere near doing a deal with anybody at the moment, we're just looking for another striker
Harry Redknapp

Former West Ham boss Redknapp had earlier poured cold water on his reported interest in Ravanelli, insisting that he had not spoken to the player, his agent or Derby.

It emerged that Redknapp's assistant, former Derby boss Jim Smith, had begun talks with his old club.

Redknapp said: "I've made enquiries about Ashley Ward, and I know that Jim spoke to Derby yesterday afternoon about Ravanelli.

"But that's as far as it's gone, we're nowhere near doing a deal with anybody at the moment, we're just looking for another striker.

"I've said all along, Tim Sherwood is my main target, he's the one I really want to bring in if possible," Redknapp told BBC Radio Solent.

Derby's debts of 30m mean they are desperate to lighten the load of Ravenelli's 40,000-a-week wages.

Smith and Derby director Bryan Richardson are hopeful of thrashing out a deal which will see Division One leaders Pompey meet a third of Ravanelli's wages.

Derby would cover the rest in the form of a straight pay-off.

Ravanelli is currently in Italy receiving treatment on an Achilles tendon injury.

His agent Palladini says Ravanelli will consider a move when he returns to England.

Palladini said: "There is an offer from Portsmouth but nothing will be decided until he returns.

I am flattered that clubs are interested in me but I am happy at Derby
Fabrizio Ravanelli

"I have spoken to Jim Smith and we have reached an agreement, but until Fabrizio evaluates it nothing will be done."

"He is very happy at Derby and wants to stay there. However, if Derby cannot afford his wages due to their financial situation then he may have to make a sacrifice and leave."

Ravanelli insists he is content at Derby and is not seeking a move.

The former Italian international said: "I have heard rumours and I am flattered that clubs are interested in me.

"But at the moment nothing has changed, I am happy at Derby."
