Leeds sink Colo Colo
Tempers became frayed in the friendly between Leeds and Colo Colo
Tempers became frayed betwen Leeds and Colo Colo
Leeds Utd 1-0 Colo Colo

Harry Kewell was Leeds match-winner as they beat Colo Colo in the latest game in their Far Eastern and Australian tour.

But Lee Bowyer was the outstanding performer as Terry Venables got his Leeds United career off to a winning start in Melbourne.

Bowyer's move to Liverpool collapsed after Anfield boss Gerard Houllier questioned his desire.

But the England Under-21 midfielder showed his commitment to Leeds with an outstanding 45-minute stint.

Home favourite Harry Kewell gave a 22,000 Colonial Stadium crowd what they had come to see.

Aussie Kewell produced the game's most memorable moment with the only goal of an entertaining match in the 39th minute.

Kewell beat two defenders on the right, accelerated into the box, and dummied past a third before thumping a left-foot shot into the roof of the net.

Colo Colo dominated the first half hour but Bowyer's industry helped Leeds fight their way back into the match.

Leeds hit the woodwork twice, first with Ian Harte's 35th minute free-kick, and then through Kewell.

It was a good test for us, because I don't think we're quite as far ahead in our preparation as they are
Leeds manager Terry Venables

Former Australian national coach Venables rang the changes at half-time, taking off six players including Bowyer, Kewell and his fellow Aussie Mark Viduka.

Colo Colo lifted their performance markedly in the second half and nearly equalised in the 63rd minute when midfielder Francisco Huaiquitan's chip beat keeper Paul Robinson but came back off the bar.

Venables described Kewell's goal as "a bit special" and expressed his satisfaction with his side's performance.

"I was quite happy, it's a good result.

"They're a very good side in the peak of their season.

"It was a good test for us, because I don't think we're quite as far ahead in our preparation as they are."

Leeds finish their Far East tour with a game against a Bangkok XI in Thailand on Tuesday.
