| Friday, 26 July, 2002, 09:27 GMT 10:27 UK Bowyer still holding out ![]() Bowyer is still at odds with the club Lee Bowyer's long-term future is still in doubt as the rift between him and Leeds United remains as wide as ever. Bowyer still refuses to commit himself to Leeds by signing a new contract, and hinted that he is still seething at his treatment following his highly-publicised court case.
The midfielder is back at Leeds after a 9m move to Liverpool collapsed and is refusing to sign a new contract worth a reported 39,000-a-week. Bowyer said: "You know why I haven't signed. Things have happened behind closed doors that nobody knows about. "I have spoken to the manager and the chairman and they know the situation," said Bowyer who has a year left on his current contract. Despite being acquitted of assaulting a student outside a Leeds nightclub, Bowyer was fined by the club and transfer-listed. Although that was later withdrawn, he was listed again when he refused to sign a new deal at the end of last season. Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale has reiterated he will sell the midfielder if he refuses to put pen to paper on a new deal. But Bowyer is refusing to bow to the pressure. He told the Daily Express newspaper: "You never know what is round the corner.
"I am not going to say yes or no to whether I have ruled out staying. "I don't know myself what I am going to do, I cannot tell the future. "There are a lot of things that can happen between now and next summer." Bowyer, though, insisted he will continue to give his best for Leeds on the field however long he remains at Elland Road. He said: "I go out to give 100% each time I play. The boss knows that and the supporters and other players know that. "I have never hidden in games and I never will do - no matter what sort of situation I am in. So there is no worry that I will be holding anything back. "I have given my all to the team, the supporters and whoever has been manager. I will carry on doing that for as long as I am at the club. Bowyer also scotched doubts over his professionalism raised by Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier after the 9m move collapsed. The Leeds midfielder said: "In football, in general, I never lack hunger or desire, not for the team I am playing for, even as a kid. "But at this moment, I play for Leeds not Liverpool, and I believe in hindsight that it is in the best interest of both parties. "Now I am back playing with people I love playing and working with with, so I am delighted." |
