| Tuesday, 4 February, 2003, 14:44 GMT Rovers let Gill go Doncaster Rovers will not stop any of their players gaining international honours this season. The club had issued a statement saying that players would not be released for semi-professional international duty as Rovers concentrate on their bid to secure promotion back to the Nationwide League. But that threat will not be carried out with striker Robert Gill getting the all-clear to link up with England's National Game XI under-23 squad for their friendly in Belgium next week.
But it is understood that Doncaster's co-operation may not be matched by other Conference clubs who are unhappy with the situation. "Gilly goes with my blessing and anybody else will be able to go," confirmed manager Dave Penney. He welcomed Gill's selection after his progress through the youth-team ranks to become the regular strike partner for leading scorer Paul Barnes. Doncaster return to action on Saturday after a three-week break when they entertain Northwich Victoria and look to close the gap on Yeovil, Chester and Halifax. And Penney hopes the enforced breather will benefit his squad, with Chris Beech, Simon Marples, Tim Ryan and Fran Tierney all heading back to action following injury. "We've got a few players back and hopefully our fitness will come through," said Penney. |
