| Saturday, 11 May, 2002, 19:05 GMT 20:05 UK Brentford left in limbo ![]() Bees players are unconsolable after play-off defeat Brentford manager Steve Coppell said he did not know who would be at the club next season after defeat in the Division Two play-off final. The Bees lost 2-0 to Stoke at the Millennium Stadium - casting further doubt on an already unsure future for the west London club. Coppell - who has done a brilliant job since taking over at Griffin Park last May - does not have a formal contract and has been linked with Brighton. Three of the club's key players - skipper Paul Evans, defender Ivar Ingimarsson and 20-goal striker Lloyd Owusu - are all free agents come the summer.
And two crucial long-term loan signings - Ben Burgess from Blackburn and Steve Sidwell from Arsenal - have expired. There is also speculation about the future of chairman Ron Noades, who has so far failed in his quest to relocate the club to a new stadium. "We just don't know what is going on," central defender Darren Powell told BBC Sport Online after defeat in Cardiff. "I could be taking instructions next season from a new manager and a chairman. "I'm just going to go on holiday and forget about it because there is simply nothing I can do about it." Coppell also said that he was uncertain about the future. "It is the nature of a football clubs that there are many imponderables in the summer - but particularly at our football club," added Coppell. "The person you should be asking is Ron Noades - he decides the future of the club. "He knows what the level of investment will be and what the future of the club will be." And Evans - who will be back at the Millennium Stadium next week for Wales' friendly international with Germany - could be first out of the door. "There is a long summer ahead of us and we'll have to see what happens," said Evans. "I think the fans know I want to play at a higher level so that I can try and further my international career. "If we hadn't done so well this year then I probably would not have got a call-up to the Wales squad this season." |
