| Friday, 2 August, 2002, 06:33 GMT 07:33 UK SPL kicks off The Old Firm are expected to battle it out for the title The Scottish Premier League season has kicked off, with Celtic aiming to win their third title in a row for the first time since Jock Stein was in charge of the club. The champions unfurled the SPL flag in front of 60,000 fans at Celtic Park before their opening game against Dunfermline. City rivals Rangers are certain to provide the Bhoys with their greatest challenge this season.
Last season's surprise package, Livingston, begin their campaign at home to Motherwell, who are rated favourites to go down this season. New boys Partick Thistle also start at home, with Alex Smith's Dundee United the visitors. In the other opening games, Hibs host Aberdeen, who impressed on occasions last season, and Hearts are the visitors to Dundee who have a new manager in Jim Duffy. Most pundits are agreed that the stage is set for a fascinating battle for the title, after the last three were won at a canter. |
