Letters of resignation were handed into the league's administrators on Thursday afternoon.

SPL secretary Iain Blair said: "I can confirm that we have received the resignations of the 10 clubs."

The decision comes after the teams failed to reach an agreement with Celtic and Rangers over changes to the league's voting structure.

The situation materialised despite all 12 clubs officially agreeing to a new two-year TV deal with the BBC on Wednesday.

The 10 non-Old Firm clubs were required to give two years notice before they could leave the SPL, with midnight on Friday the deadline.

Despite their resignation, talks are to continue to try and resolve the differences with the Old Firm.

"We would like to see the Old Firm agreeing to the changes in voting," Yorkston added.

"We are supposed to be equals, as they are in the English Premiership.

"You don't get Manchester United saying they are the biggest force in England and blocking everything but that is basically what we have up here.

"The new Rangers chairman had said they would agree to 8-4 but on Monday we were handed a document with 104 points.

"We would have been prepared to accept some of these points but not 104."

The group of 10 first raised the prospect of resigning after Celtic and Rangers blocked the launch of an SPL TV channel in April.
