Burnley 0-3 Portsmouth

Nigel Quashie celebrates with Portsmouth fans

Portsmouth stayed top of Division One by derailing the Burnley bandwagon in impressive fashion at Turf Moor.

Harry Redknapp's side have lost only once in the League this season and although the Clarets were undefeated in 12 games they were no match for Pompey, who dominated the first half.

The visitors had only Nigel Quashie's 12st-minute strike to show for their efforts at half-time,.

And even though Burnley got to grips with Paul Merson and new loan signing Steve Stone in the second period, they were undone by two more quality strikes and missed a second-half penalty.

Bulgarian Svetoslav Todorov fired Pompey into a two-goal lead after 58 minutes and a breakaway goal in the closing stages - slotted home by Kevin Harper - put the result beyond doubt.

Todorov was involved when Portsmouth took the lead, the Bulgarian striker playing in Quashie who drilled a right-foot 20-yard shot into the bottom corner from the right side of the area.

Although Burnley threatened briefly after the restart - Hislop saved well from Gareth Taylor's close-range effort and Little curled one wide from 20 yards - Todorov struck to give Pompey a two-goal lead.

Collecting the ball in the left channel, Todorov let one go right-footed from 25 yards to beat Marlon Beresford low to his left.

In a rare second-half counter-attack Portsmouth killed off Burnley with a third goal in the 86th minute.

The impressive Stone got clear down the right wing and crossed for Kevin Harper to slide the ball home left-footed from six yards.
