Morecambe 3-0 Doncaster

Home specialists Morecambe did their promotion hopes the power of good by putting a dent in Doncaster's Football League dreams.

Strikes from Stuart Drummond and Gary Thompson set the hosts on their way before Danny Carlton's last minute effort gave the scoreline a comprehensive look.

There was little indication that Doncaster were set for their first away blank of the season early on, however, as the visitors forced four corners in the opening 10 minutes.

But their inability to turn any of them into clear cut chances gave Morecambe time to find their feet.

Having absorbed the early pressure, the hosts came back with Adriano Rigoglioso's long-range effort testing Rovers goalkeeper Andy Warrington.

And the next long-range effort bypassed the visiting stopper completely as Drummond's sixth of the season gave Morecambe the lead in style.

Collecting Thompson's pass 25 yards from goal, the midfielder steered the ball into the top right-hand corner of the net.

Having been slow out of the blocks for the first half, Morecambe almost made the same mistake again after the break.

Paul Barnes' volley, Simon Marples' free-kick and David Morley's header all forced home keeper Craig Mawson into action in the minutes after the re-start.

But just as the equaliser looked imminent, Morecambe found the perfect response to double their lead with a sucker punch.

Thompson may have netted just once in 11 starts prior to the match - but his right-foot finish into the bottom corner showed no lack of confidence.

Rovers were denied a grandstand finish when Mawson got his fingertips to Muirhead's goalbound effort, before Carlton had the final say from close range.

When these sides meet again on the season's penultimate day, such small margins could make the difference between the Conference and the Football League.
