Wydad conquer Africa
Fans of Asante Kotoko
The Kumasi stadium was full to bursting point
Kotoko 2-1 Wydad
Final finished 2-2 on aggregate.
Wydad win on away goals.

Wydad Casablanca are the new holders of the African Cup Winners' Cup.

Although they lost 2-1 to Asante Kotoko their away goal was enough to hand them the trophy on Sunday.

The Moroccan side came to Ghana protecting a narrow 1-0 lead from the first leg.

A header on 76 minutes from Moustapha Talha was the crucial strike for the North Africans.

The huge crowd in Kumasi, estimated at 80,000, went home disappointed.

Kotoko had the better of the first half, but found it difficult to carve out chances against a determined Wydad defence.

Kotoko's Kodjo Pokou was their biggest threat, but he was as wasteful as he was brilliant.

It took Kotoko until the second half to take the lead - and level the tie on aggregate.

Aziz Ansah scored with a messy shot that the Wydad captain Lahcen Abrami almost managed to clear.

Asante Kotoko's Michael Osei
Michael Osei's late goal was not enough for Kotoko

That strike invigorated the Ghanaians, with Michael Osei and Stephan Oduro coming close to doubling Kotoko's lead.

But it was Wydad that struck the decisve goal of the game.

Talha climbed highest to head home from a corner, which meant Kotoko needed two extra goals to win the Cup.

Michael Osei did score a late goal that won Kotoko the match - but it was not enought to snatch the cup out of Wydad's hands.

The defeat was visibly upsetting for Kotoko fans, as many left the stadium in tears.

Wydad are the first Moroccan team to win the trophy.

It is a significant triumph for Wydad's Argentinian coach Oscar Fullone, who has won three continental cups in four years.

Fullone made his name in Africa with back-to-back Champions' League trophies with Asec of Ivory Coast and Wydad's Moroccan arch-rivals, Raja.
