| Atouba stakes claim for Cameroon ![]() Atouba (left) was one of the best players on the pitch Cameroon's Timothee Atouba could have forced his way into the thinking of national coach Winfried Schaefer after a solid display in the Uefa Champions League on Tuesday. He was in the FC Basle team which upset the form book against English Premiership side Liverpool. The club succeeded in dumping the former four-time European Cup winners out of the competition. They also made history by becoming the first Swiss outfit to make it to the last sixteen of Europe's premier club contest. Atouba, who played at left-back, was a major influence on the game preventing Liverpool from mounting attacks on their right side. He also played a major role in attack with incisive runs. As early as the second minute a move started by him ended with a goal by Argentinean Juilio Rossi. Poacher's goal Less than ten minutes later Rossi's strike partner and compatriot, Christian Gimenez, slotted home to make it two. Then, with less than thirty minutes on the clock, Atouba's attacking play was again rewarded. He was the first to react to a Hakim Yakin free kick which bounced loose in the penalty box to score Basle's third. The game ended 3-3 but Basle had done enough to progress to the next phase, one point ahead of Liverpool. Cameroon coach Schaefer was on hand to witness the performance. With the Indomitable Lions' usual left-back Pierre Wome sidelined at English Premiership club Fulham, Atouba could well feature in the next Cameroon squad. | See also: 12 Nov 02 | Africa 15 Oct 02 | Africa 12 Nov 02 | Champions League Top Africans abroad stories now: Links to more Africans abroad stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
