Mboma ready to step aside
Partrick Mboma training with his teammates at the World Cup
Patrick Mboma has been a central figure for the Lions

Cameroon's long serving striker Patrick Mboma says he will quit the Indomitable Lions if better players are available to play for the country.

"If younger players can show they are better than me, it's not a problem," he told Sport Online from Paris.

"But I have a lot of experience which can still make me a key player."

Mboma, a veteran of two World Cups, three African Nations Cups and the 2000 Olympics, where he won a gold medal, said his international career is not over yet.

"The coach told me in August that I'm still in his plans, and that was important for me to hear.

"The future will show if I am still needed. If it's not the case, it won't be a problem for me to leave," said the 2000 African Player of the Year.

"I'm not thinking of retirement. My ambition is to help Cameroon do well in the next Confederations Cup and Nations Cup. Then I'll think about retirement."

Mboma said this season's surprise move from Parma to Libyan club El Ittihad should have no negative impact on his Cameroon career.

"The level is lower of course, but I'm working hard and staying competitive.

"You'll see for yourself when I'm back with the national team.

"I recognise that it's a strange move, and even today, I still think it's strange.

"But I'm enjoying the responsibility of being a leader and trying to build a new team spirit.

Mboma said the contract offered by the North African club was too good for him to ignore.

"The choice was purely financial.

I'm nearly 32 years old and now it's time to collect money for my future."
