| Thursday, 3 October, 2002, 16:40 GMT 17:40 UK Tanzanian football hits the road ![]() Zimbabwe women team at training The Tanzania FA has taken a leaf out of the Zimbabwe FA's book by sending their women's team to its next fixture by road. The Football Association of Tanzania (FAT) says the national side will leave for Zimbabwe on Tuesday to and will arrive on Thursday. Their match takes place on Sunday.
FAT secretary-general Michael Wambura said the move was a cost-cutting measure. "Zimbabwe has proved to us that it is possible, there is no need to spend our scarce resources on air transport," he told reporters in Dar es Salaam. Wambura added that the men's team will also travel to and from Uganda by road to play a friendly match this weekend. He said they had written to the Uganda and Rwanda FAs for warm-up matches before facing Sudan in an African Cup of Nations qualifier next weekend. Uganda had agreed to the fixture but the FAT had not received a reply from Rwanda he said. In a further illustration ofthe cash constraints facing Tanzania football, the premier league has been suspended so that FAT funds could be used to back the national team. Wambura said the FA is looking for more sponsorship in a bid to re-start the league. However clubs say the delay means they are in danger of missing Caf deadlines to submit player lists to compete in continental club championships. | See also: 18 Sep 02 | Africa 03 Oct 02 | Africa 03 Oct 02 | Cup of Nations Top Africa stories now: Links to more Africa stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
