The Dutchman whose work permit expired two weeks ago is owed more than US$200,000 in arrears. Brouwer has insisted that he will only leave Zambia after he has been paid his money. Brouwer last week had a meeting with Zambia's sports ministry and Dutch embassy officials to seek their intervention in the matter.
Munda admitted that his ministry had no money to clear the outstanding arrears. Brouwer was last year suspended by Caf for a bust up with match officials during an Africa Cup qualifier against Madagascar. After the suspension Brouwer was given a job at the sports ministry looking after youth development until his two year contract with the Zambian FA expired this month. The president of the Football Association of Zambia Evaristo Kasunga continues to insist that his association is not responsible for the debt accrued. Kasunga said that after Brouwer's suspension, the association wanted him to leave the country but the state held on to him. "They ended up taking him to the ministry of sports to help develop youth football in the country," said Kasunga. "That meant he was no longer FAZ's employee." Brouwer's monthly salary was US$10,000 and he was entitled to half the amount whilst on suspension. He is one of two former coaches seeking money from the Zambia FA. Ben Bamfuchile is also waiting for $8,000 in unpaid wages. | See also: 15 Aug 02 | Africa 15 Jul 02 | Africa 10 Apr 02 | Africa Top Africa stories now: Links to more Africa stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
