Nigeria coach under fire
Chukwu (first left) managed the Kenyan national team

The appointment of Christian Chukwu as coach of the Super Eagles has attracted negative reactions in Nigeria.

Some football journalists and fans have said that the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) has made an expensive error by selecting him.

"Chukwu who was sacked by Rangers (a Nigerian league club) has now been brought to coach the Eagles?," asked a stunned Ade Ojeikere, sports editor of the Lagos-based National Interest newspaper.

"I am disappointed in the NFA. It is definitely going to be a costly mistake," said Dauda Mayowa, a fan.

Unassuming

Chukwu worked under Dutchman Clemens Westerhof and the pair led Nigeria to win the 1994 African Nations Cup in Tunisia.

But it was said that Chukwu took a back seat to the domineering Dutch coach.

"We all know that when Chukwu was there as assistant coach of the Eagles, he could not express himself nor exert any authority," said football analyst Chukwuma Peters.

He recalled one occasion when Chukwu was left solely in charge of the team.

"I remember that in April 1993, Westerhof went on holiday. Chukwu took the side to Addis Ababa and lost 1-0 to an unfancied Ethiopian side," he said.

Chukwu has not had a track record of achievement since leaving the Nigerian job in 1994.

He was sacked as coach of the Kenyan national team and local club Rangers International for poor results.
