Nigeria Football Association (NFA) secretary- general Taiwo Ogunjobi told reporters that French, Dutch, German, Ukrainian and Yugoslav nationals have applied. Refusing to reveal the names of the applicants, Ogunjobi said Frenchman Philippe Troussier, who led Japan to the second round of the World Cup, is not one of the coaches in the running for the job. Announcing the decision to recruit a foreign coach last week, Nigeria's sports minister Stephen Akiga said the plan was an interim measure. According to Akiga, the long-term plan is to groom a suitable indigenous coach for the job. At the World Cup finals, the Super Eagles lost to Argentina and Sweden and drew with England. It was the first time in three World Cup appearances that Nigeria failed to reach the second round. Akiga said Nigeria needed a foreign coach to get the best out of their European based players. Adegboye Onigbinde had been in charge of the Nigerian team after Shaibu Amodu's dismissal in February but he was not offered a permanent deal by the NFA. | See also: 27 Jun 02 | Nigeria 05 Jul 02 | Africa 25 Jun 02 | Africa Top Africa stories now: Links to more Africa stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
