| Wednesday, 22 May, 2002, 16:08 GMT 17:08 UK Algeria coach sacked Rabah Madjer has been sacked as manager of Algeria's national team. This follows critical remarks he made about Algerian Football Federation (Faf) officials in Le Soir, a Belgian newspaper. Madjer has reportedly referred to Faf officials as "ignorant" after the Desert Warriors drew 0-0 with Belgium in a friendly on 14 May in Brussels. Faf asked Madjer to explain the comments he made within 24 hours or be dismissed from his post. It is the second time in seven years that Madjer has been dismissed from the job. Mohamed Raouraoua, Faf president, described the former coach's comments as "libellous and defamatory." Madjer had been in charge for nine months and was rebuilding the national team for the 2004 African Nations Cup in Tunisia. In 1995, the former Algerian captain lost the job after criticising the federation in a live television debate. Hamid Zouba, a technical director at the federation, has been appointed to take over Madjer's job. | See also: 15 May 02 | Sports Talk 21 May 02 | Africa 21 May 02 | Africa Top Africa stories now: Links to more Africa stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
