The Australian skipper said: "We're going to play as well as we can in the second Test and take it from there.

"We'll play aggressively and positively and if we play well enough, we can win the next Test match."

Waugh singled out opening batsman Matthew Hayden for special praise after the burly Queenslander scored 300 runs in the match.

It reinforced Hayden's position as the number one ranked Test batsman in the world.

"Matty Hayden is batting almost as well as anyone in the history of the game at the moment," he commented.

"In front of his home crowds, it doesn't get any better than that for him. He really deserved it. He's worked very hard to get in the side and he's not going to let it slip now."

England skipper Nasser Hussain surprised most observers by choosing to bowl first after winning the toss on the opening day, but Waugh played down the significance of his decision.

"The toss of a coin doesn't win a Test match or lose a Test match.

"A lot's been made of that - I think it's basically irrelevant."

Australia have two selections dilemmas ahead of the second Test in Adelaide.

They must decide whether Darren Lehmann did enough to keep his place in the middle order with scores of 30 and 20, and whether to recall Brett Lee in place of Andy Bichel.

Paceman Lee pressed his claims by taking 10 wickets as New South Wales beat Tasmania by an innings and eight runs in the Pura Cup.
