| Hussain seeks renewed effort ![]() Alec Stewart's innings last one ball Captain Nasser Hussain offered no excuses as England's Ashes campaign began with a crushing defeat in the first Test in Brisbane. He acknowledged that his team had been outplayed on three of the four days - and accepted he made a "big mistake" by putting Australia in after winning the toss. England were beaten by 384 runs after being dismissed for just 79 in their second innings on the fourth day. "We were poor, to be honest. The first day was diabolical," Hussain said afterwards.
"I don't know if that was a case of first day nerves - I know I felt a little bit nervous out there and I've played 70 odd games. "After that we came back well on the second day and then again today we capitulated. "The Australians have set the benchmark in everything and we've got to try and up our game to keep up with them." Hussain had earlier used his column in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper to admit that his assessment of the pitch before the match had been wrong. "It's obvious, blatantly obvious, that the decision I made to send Australia in to bat in the first Test was wrong. "As England captain, I am paid to make decisions and I am big enough to admit that this one was a big mistake," he wrote.
Hussain refused to condemn his team too harshly for being bowled out for such a low total. "It's nothing new, Australia have just bowled out Pakistan for 50s and 60s. They're a finely tuned outfit at the moment. All we can do is work harder. "Everyone in that dressing room has got to get their heads down, have a look at their dismissals and try and work harder. "If there's any fault in your game, anything at all, they'll exploit it. We've got to be wary of that and try try and eradicate our faults." England now travel to Hobart to face Australia A, with the second Test beginning in Adelaide on 21 November. |
