Early boost

Australia's innings lost momentum following the early dismissal of Matthew Hayden, who gloved a leg-side catch to Alec Stewart off Caddick when he had reached 197.

Caddick bowled 11 overs in a single spell during the morning and also claimed the wicket of Steve Waugh, who scratched around for seven runs before he was caught at leg gully.

White also picked up two wickets before Shane Warne launched a counter-attack with 57 off 65 balls, the eighth half century of his Test career.

He finally fell to Caddick and Giles polished off the rest of the tail as the home side fell short of 500.

Trescothick hits out after a scratchy start

Trescothick should have gone in the second over of England's innings when he edged McGrath to third slip, but Damien Martyn failed to hang onto a one-handed chance.

McGrath had announced his intention to target Michael Vaughan during the series, but the Yorkshireman was undaunted as he took the attack to Australia.

He hit three fours before the tea interval and had reached 33 off only 36 balls when he was adjudged caught behind as McGrath jagged a delivery back off the pitch.

It was Australia's last moment of joy and, with Jason Gillespie only able to bowl three overs, Trescothick passed 2,000 runs in Test cricket before the close.
