| Resilient England hit back ![]() Vaughan gave England's innings a flying start First Test, Brisbane, day two: Australia 492; England 158-1 (at close) England showed the fighting spirit demanded by captain Nasser Hussain and coach Duncan Fletcher as they shrugged off a dismal opening day performance at The Gabba. They picked off Australia's last eight wickets for 128 runs and then made an excellent start to their reply with Marcus Trescothick and Mark Butcher sharing an unbroken century stand. They each benefited from a dropped catch and Butcher was given a second let-off on 40 when Adam Gilchrist failed to gather cleanly when presented with a stumping chance. Trescothick was 63 not out the close, with Butcher on 51, but England still need another 135 to avoid the follow-on. Spinner Ashley Giles took four for 101 earlier in the day and was supported well by Andy Caddick and Craig White as England stuck to their task in determined fashion.
Australia's innings lost momentum following the early dismissal of Matthew Hayden, who gloved a leg-side catch to Alec Stewart off Caddick when he had reached 197. Caddick bowled 11 overs in a single spell during the morning and also claimed the wicket of Steve Waugh, who scratched around for seven runs before he was caught at leg gully. White also picked up two wickets before Shane Warne launched a counter-attack with 57 off 65 balls, the eighth half century of his Test career. He finally fell to Caddick and Giles polished off the rest of the tail as the home side fell short of 500.
McGrath had announced his intention to target Michael Vaughan during the series, but the Yorkshireman was undaunted as he took the attack to Australia. He hit three fours before the tea interval and had reached 33 off only 36 balls when he was adjudged caught behind as McGrath jagged a delivery back off the pitch. It was Australia's last moment of joy and, with Jason Gillespie only able to bowl three overs, Trescothick passed 2,000 runs in Test cricket before the close. England: Nasser Hussain (capt), Marcus Trescothick, Michael Vaughan, Mark Butcher, John Crawley, Alec Stewart (wkt), Craig White, Simon Jones, Ashley Giles, Andy Caddick, Matthew Hoggard. Australia: Steve Waugh (capt), Matthew Hayden, Justin Langer, Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn, Darren Lehmann, Adam Gilchrist, Jason Gillespie, Shane Warne, Andrew Bichel, Glenn McGrath. |
