Australia (492 & 296-5 dec) beat England (325 & 79) by 384 runs

Australia wrapped up an emphatic win with a day to spare as England's mental resolve crumbled at The Gabba.

A match that began with Simon Jones suffering a tour ending knee injury ended when Andy Caddick skied a catch off Shane Warne as the tourists were bowled out in just 28.2 overs.

It was their lowest-ever total at Brisbane, beating their 114 all out in the 1990-91 series.

The home side had declared with a 463-run lead after Matthew Hayden became only the fourth Australian in history to score a hundred in both innings of an Ashes Test.

England's second innings became a procession with only Mark Butcher (40) showing the technique and tenacity to keep Glenn McGrath and Warne at bay.

McGrath took four for 36 to finish with eight wickets in the game as Nasser Hussain was left to rue his decision to put Australia in after winning the toss on the first morning.

Early boundaries

Australia resumed on 158 for one and added 120 before lunch as Man of the Match Hayden accelerated away from partner Damien Martyn after four boundaries off Matthew Hoggard.

The left-hander followed his 197 with 103 before giving a return catch to Ashley Giles, who also had Martyn caught smartly at slip by Hussain for 64.

Steve Waugh (12) failed for the second time but Adam Gilchrist began his innings with a six and raced to 60 not out off 59 balls before the declaration was made.

England made the worst possible start after being left 47 overs to survive before the close as McGrath won a dubious lbw decision against Michael Vaughan, who departed second ball.

The tourists were three for two as Marcus Trescothick edged Jason Gillespie to slip, but enjoyed a slice of luck when Hussain survived a confident appeal for a catch by wicket-keeper Gilchrist.

He could do nothing about a magnificent McGrath leg-cutter on 11, however, and it soon became a procession with Crawley run out for a duck and Alec Stewart completing his first pair in a Test.

Stewart fell to a juggling slip catch by Hayden, who excelled again when he dived to remove Craig White for 13, one of only three England batsmen to reach double figures.

Warne bowled superbly and he finally ended Butcher's 116-minute vigil via a bat-pad catch before ending the game with Caddick's wicket for figures of three for 29.
