| Newton stars for England ![]() Clare Connor began the England revival Second Women's Test, Taunton England 284-7 v India England recovered well from a disastrous start thanks to a brilliant 98 from 24-year-old Laura Newton. The number six batsman's previous best score in two Tests was just 15 and her partnership of 110 with Mandie Godliman (55 not out) was absolutely vital. Godliman joined Newton with England on 147 for six. Before then they had been in even worse shape at 27 for three after Indian captain Anjum Chopra won the toss and elected to bowl first. Charlotte Edwards fell in the second over of the morning for a single, and Karen Leng and Carolyn Atkins made scores of 10 and 12 respectively in an inauspicious start. Claire Taylor and captain Clare Connor finally got some runs on the board, putting on 43 for the fourth wicket before Taylor was out for 27 after lasting an hour at the crease. Newton and Connor continued the revival in fine style, taking the score from 70 for for four to 126 for five. But when Connor was stumped for 48, Laura Harper added only 11 to the score before she was needlessly run out. It was time for the critical Newton-Godliman partnership. They were together for two-and-three-quarter hours before Newton fell two runs short of what would have been a well-deserved century. She was the third victim of right-arm seamer Jhulan Goswami, a real prospect for the future at just 19 years of age.
