Women's one-day tri-series, Durham: New Zealand 113-3 (31 overs) beat England 111 (38 overs) by 7 wickets

England's Women learnt that they still have plenty of room for improvement as Emily Drumm's polished 63 not out carried the world champions into Saturday's final.

Hopes of an upset were high in the home dressing room following their win over India in Jersey last week, but they were let down by a batting effort which saw the top eight fall for single figure scores.

Chasing a modest target, the White Ferns lost Rebecca Rolls early on, but Drumm hit 10 fours to steer her side home with 19 overs in hand.

England never recovered from losing their first four wickets - skipper Clare Connor, Charlotte Edwards, Claire Taylor and Arran Thompson - with only 40 on the board.

It looked for a time as if extras would be the highest scorer before tail-enders Isa Guha and Laura Spragg, playing only their second and third one-day internationals respectively, took the total past 100.

It was a highly impressive display by New Zealand's attack, with the wickets shared among six different bowlers, but Guha and Spragg collected seven fours between them as they put on 45.

Spragg was eventually stumped off Aimee Mason for 21 and the off-spinner ended the innings with the wicket of Clare Taylor, leaving Guha high and dry on 22 not out.

England, to their credit, were enthusiastic in the field, and were given a lift when Rolls was caught behind off Spragg, who took the new ball in the absence of Lucy Pearson.

Drumm encountered few problems, however, and she was 28 not out when the teams took lunch at the fall of Kathleen Payne's wicket, caught and bowled by Laura Harper for 11.

New Zealand were 51 for two at that stage and although Connor had Kate Pulford lbw for 16 following the resumption, Drumm and Haidee Tiffen completed the formalities.

The White Ferns have now won 14 successive one-day matches against England since their defeat in the 1993 World Cup final.
