England women thrash India

Women's one-day tri-series, Jersey
England (60-4) beat India (59 all out)

England's women ended a miserable run of nine straight defeats in one-day internationals with a convincing win over India in Jersey.

Charlotte Edwards proved her worth in her first game back after a year out following cruciate ligament surgery, guiding England home with an unbeaten 31.

India had earlier collapsed dramatically, with none of their batsmen able to make double figures as off-spinner Laura Harper took four wickets.

The victory was England's first since they beat Sri Lanka during the 2000 World Cup, and they have since suffered a 3-0 whitewash in India.

In the first match of the triangular series, England won the toss and chose to field.

It quickly proved to be a wise decision.

Opener Sulakshna Naik was the first to fall after reaching nine - which proved to be the top score by an Indian batsman - before being trapped lbw by Isa Guha.

Lucy Pearson then had Sulakshna Naik caught by Charlotte Edwards with the score on 12.

Wickets from Pearson and one for Clare Taylor had India struggling on 43 for 5, before Harper stepped in to finish the job.

She bowled Mamantha Maben before removing Hemlata Kala caught and bowled, and Arnundhati Kirkire and Sunita Singh soon folllowed.

Guha claimed the final wicket of Neetu David with the score on 59, before a brief downpour threatened to ruin England's day.

Claire Taylor had already been run out when the rain came with the score on seven for one, but Edwards took charge on the resumption.

The score moved on to 35 for two before opener Clare Connor fell to Deepa Kulkarni.

But the late dismissals of Arran Thompson and Laura Newton - both with the score on 52 - could not stop Edwards clinching the match.
