White Ferns take trophy

Women's Tri-Series Final, Chester-le-Street: New Zealand 161 all out (48.5 overs) beat England 98 all out (43.3 overs) by 63 runs

New Zealand clinched the Tri-Series Trophy with a 63-run victory against England in the final at Chester-le-Street.

England's batting line-up capitulated with only three batsmen making double figures after the White Ferns had recorded a challenging 161 in a low-scoring match.

Claire Taylor led the way during the first half of the innings as England chased New Zealand's total.

But she was run out for 32 as Melissa Reynard took an ill-advised single to cover, Haidee Tiffen fielding sharply.

Captain Claire Connor was bowled by Rachel Pullar with just 19 runs on the board, and Charlotte Edwards and Arran Thompson followed in quick succession.

But Taylor kept her head, facing 81 deliveries and striking four boundaries before her unlucky dismissal.

Wickets fell at regular intervals in the face of some tight bowling, particularly from Mason and Pullar.

Godliman hit out at the end, but England were all out for 98 when she fell lbw to Tiffin.

Early wickets

Connor's decision to put New Zealand into bat after she won the toss had appeared to be justified after her bowlers dismissed the Kiwi openers without a run on the board.

Isa Guha opened the bowling and struck with her fifth ball as Nicola Payne tickled a half volley to Laura Harper at slip.

New Zealand's woes were doubled with the first delivery of the second over when Rebecca Rolls top edged a Laura Spragg full toss and was caught by wicketkeeper Mandie Godliman.

Guha then took the crucial wicket of Kiwi captain Emily Drumm, who mistimed a pull to Claire Taylor at midwicket after making 15 runs.

Kate Pulford held New Zealand's innings together with a patient 55 off 105 balls, including three boundaries, but she streadily ran out of partners.

She was eventually out caught and bowled by Clare Taylor, but Aimee Mason and Sara McGlashon put on 37 crucial runs for the seventh wicket with some lusty blows.

Guha took the wicket of Mason to finish with 3-28 as England looked to have given themselves a chance of victory.
