Caddick bagged 19 wickets in three Tests in New Zealand at the beginning of the year and in the process took his career total to 200, only the ninth England bowler to reach that milestone.

But his absence because of security fears from the tour of India, and the side strain he suffered in the third Test against Sri Lanka have opened the door to others.

Matthew Hoggard in particular has staked a claim to open the bowling even if Caddick and former strike partner Darren Gough are fit.

At 6ft 5ins tall, Caddick is capable of disconcerting lift, which could make him a handful for Indian batsmen.

But his best bowling tends to be done in the second innings of a match, and doubts remain over his motivation in the toughest situations.
