An impressive opener in England age-group cricket, Key gained a reputation as a batsman with potential who lacked application. An impressive third county season in 2001, though, saw him gain 1281 runs, with four centuries, and a place in England's Academy trip to Perth. Under the tutelage of Rod Marsh, Key says he was shocked to learn exactly what it took to succeed at the highest level.
