England beat New Zealand by 33 runs at Auckland's Eden Park on Saturday to set up a deciding match in the five-game one-day international series in Dunedin on Tuesday.

England compiled 193-6 off 40 overs after two lengthy rain delays had forced a reduced overs match.

Graham Thorpe made a patient 59 not out while Michael Vaughan also hit 59 - off just 53 balls with eight fours and one six.

New Zealand were set a revised Duckworth-Lewis target of 223 but folded for 189 despite a swashbuckling stand of 67 between Chris Cairns (58 off 56 balls) and Chris Harris (23).

The pair rescued New Zealand from the edge of an abyss at 68-6 but England's Andrew Flintoff took 4-17 off seven overs to see off the home side.

Harris was eventually caught by Flintoff off Craig White, while the big-hitting Cairns was bowled by Paul Collingwood.

Andre Adams assumed the bat-swinging mantle and hit a quickfire 26 not out but Daniel Vettori and Daryl Tuffey could not match his resilience.

For England, Matthew Hoggard took 2-27 off his eight overs, Darren Gough registered figures of 2-33 off seven and there was one wicket apiece for Craig White and Paul Collingwood.

England won the toss but started badly, losing Marcus Trescothick on the third ball of the day.

Nasser Hussain also fell cheaply before Nick Knight was run out for 38 to leave his side on 78-3.

But Thorpe and Vaughan put on a brisk 89 before Vaughan was run out in bizarre circumstances.

Vaughan walked in the 34th over before the televison umpire had time to officiate after appearing to drop his bat in trying to beat Daniel Vettori's shy at the stumps.

Flintoff fell soon after at which point the heavens opened.

When the skies eventually cleared England resumed on 181-5 with a newly-revised 2.1 over left and as they tried to make hay Paul Collingwood was stumped for four as Craig White saw the innings out.

Earlier, Trescothick lobbed up an easy catch to Chris Cairns at mid-on off paceman Daryl Tuffey and Hussain was lbw to Cairns for 17 in the 11th over.

Meanwhile, Knight was unlucky to be run out going for a second off a Thorpe cut through cover and Flintoff hoisted an easy catch fo Nathan Astle off Cairns for 2.

The five-match series is poised at 2-2 after Hussain's side kept the competition alive with a 43-run win in Napier in the third game.
