Hussain relieved at fightback
Collingwood was England's hero in Napier

Patient batting and some genuine swing bowling were the keys to England's success in Napier, according to captain Nasser Hussain.

And he happily explained the decision to play an unchanged side from the eleven who were humiliated in Wellington.

"Eleven messed up so it was up to the same 11 to get it right," he said.

Paul Collingwood was the surprise bowling hero with four wickets as England avoided the ignominy of losing the series with two matches to spare by winning in convincing fashion.

And the Durham all-rounder said: "I think it's unbelievable I got the man-of-the-match award - it's my third now but I never thought I'd get one for my bowling.

"I think I've doubled my wicket tally in one-day cricket. Today was my day and thank God it was."

Nick Knight and Graham Thorpe shone with the bat after England were inserted by Stephen Fleming, and only when Fleming, who hit 76 not out and Lou Vincent were at the wicket together, did the Black Caps look like winning.

But Hussain said: "It doesn't make us a great side again. Two days ago we were a dreadful side.

"We've got to find our level and keep improving. Everybody in the side needs to keep improving."

He was glad to see the team bat properly again.

"All winter we've started well. And then as you see in Wellington, the wheels do come off occasionally so it was very important the innings of Graham Thorpe down the order.

"Flem said we had to get past 230 and we would have settled with what we got."

The bowling was all about controlled aggression - and some useful swingers.

"I played here four years ago and Chris Harris swung us out and it just swings around a little bit later on," said Hussain.

"I tried Craig White and he didn't really swing it but the moment Colly came on he swung it.

"Hoggard bowls at Headingley where it swings and he bowled well too.

"We've still got a lot of work to do but it's important that we came back today strongly."
