| Wednesday, 20 February, 2002, 09:23 GMT England keep series alive Collingwood took four wickets with his swing bowling One-day international, Napier: England 244-5 (50 overs) beat New Zealand 201 all out (46.3 overs) by 43 runs. Paul Collingwood was the surprise bowling hero as England clawed their way back into the series with victory in the third one-day international against New Zealand in Napier. Collingwood claimed 4-38 to destroy New Zealand's middle order as England won by 43 runs. England needed to win after the humiliation of being bowled out for 89 in Wellington on Saturday, but they still trail 2-1 in the five-match series. England showed greater resolve after being put into bat by Black Caps captain Stephen Fleming.
Marcus Trescothick put on 71 with Knight for the first wicket, before chopping Cairns to point on 41. Knight reigned in his natural attacking instincts to anchor the innings, despite being struck a painful blow on the chin from an Ian Butler, bouncer and put on 56 for the second wicket with Nasser Hussain. Hussain took 17 deliveries to get off the mark and scratched around for 24 as England lost their momentum. But Knight's partnership of 65 with Thorpe formed the backbone of the innings before the opener edged a Chris Cairns slower delivery to Chris Nevin. Thorpe was caught on the boundary for a 53-ball 52, to give Cairns his third wicket, and Andrew Flintoff perished in similar fashion off the bowling of Andre Adams after smashing 19 off 21 balls. New Zealand's reply got off to a bad start when Nathan Astle was unlucky to be given out from a Darren Gough delivery that did not appear to take an edge.
The England paceman had another victim, as he bowled his 10 overs in one spell, when Craig McMillan slashed him to gully. Lou Vincent steadied the ship as he shared in a 58-run partnership with Fleming, but Collingwood started a remarkable spell when Vincent steered him to gully. The Durham all-rounder then had Cairns taken on the midwicket boundary, before trapping Harris lbw. He claimed his fourth wicket when Adams heaved him to mid-off. Fleming stood firm to score an unbeaten 76, but wickets kept falling around him. Ashley Giles pinned Daniel Vettori lbw and then bowled Daryl Tuffey, who was going for a huge swipe. And Gough polished off the Kiwi innings by striking Butler on the head then bowling him next ball. New Zealand: C J Nevin (Wkt), N J Astle, S P Fleming (Capt) C D McMillan, L Vincent, C L Cairns, C Z Harris, A R Adams D L Vettori, D R Tuffey, I G Butler. England: M E Trescothick (Wkt), N V Knight, N Hussain (Capt) G P Thorpe, O A Shah, P D Collingwood, A Flintoff, C White A F Giles, D Gough, M J Hoggard. |
