Knight receives running repairs after being struck

Opener Nick Knight led the way with a patient 80, and the England innings featured half century partnerships for the first three wickets.

Marcus Trescothick put on 71 with Knight for the first wicket, before chopping Cairns to point on 41.

Knight reigned in his natural attacking instincts to anchor the innings, despite being struck a painful blow on the chin from an Ian Butler, bouncer and put on 56 for the second wicket with Nasser Hussain.

Hussain took 17 deliveries to get off the mark and scratched around for 24 as England lost their momentum.

But Knight's partnership of 65 with Thorpe formed the backbone of the innings before the opener edged a Chris Cairns slower delivery to Chris Nevin.

Thorpe was caught on the boundary for a 53-ball 52, to give Cairns his third wicket, and Andrew Flintoff perished in similar fashion off the bowling of Andre Adams after smashing 19 off 21 balls.

New Zealand's reply got off to a bad start when Nathan Astle was unlucky to be given out from a Darren Gough delivery that did not appear to take an edge.

Nevin then skied Matthew Hoggard after an aggressive innings of 21.

The England paceman had another victim, as he bowled his 10 overs in one spell, when Craig McMillan slashed him to gully.

Lou Vincent steadied the ship as he shared in a 58-run partnership with Fleming, but Collingwood started a remarkable spell when Vincent steered him to gully.

The Durham all-rounder then had Cairns taken on the midwicket boundary, before trapping Harris lbw. He claimed his fourth wicket when Adams heaved him to mid-off.

Fleming stood firm to score an unbeaten 76, but wickets kept falling around him.

Ashley Giles pinned Daniel Vettori lbw and then bowled Daryl Tuffey, who was going for a huge swipe.

And Gough polished off the Kiwi innings by striking Butler on the head then bowling him next ball.
