England skipper Nasser Hussain pulled no punches about his side's abject performance following their 155-run defeat by New Zealand in the second one-day international.

"We were outplayed in all three departments, to be honest. Batting, bowling, fielding - they did better than us, simple as that.

"We didn't turn up today. We were dreadful," he admitted.

England's effort was reminiscent of last summer, when they lost every match in the home triangular series against Australia and Pakistan.

We've got a young side and days like this will happen

Their score of 89 all out was only three runs better than they managed against Australia at Old Trafford, England's lowest ever one-day total.

"We've got no excuses. We dropped catches, we didn't put the ball in the right areas and batted poorly all the way down.

"In fact, I'm probably more disappointed about the loss the other day. That was a game we should have won and in games like this, you play badly, you lose.

"It's when you play well, you've got to cash in and win," said Hussain.

England must now win all three remaining matches to take the series.

Hussain's innings was brief

"I firmly believe we've got the players to beat New Zealand. We've just got to make sure we turn up for the next game and put in the performances that will put us in a position to beat the opposition," Hussain added.

Opposite number Stephen Fleming was delighted by his side's comprehensive victory, coming just eight days after they were outplayed by South Africa in the VB Series final in Australia.

"The pitch was low and slow and it presented us with an opportunity to attack, once we'd put runs on the board, which we did."

He added: "We took risks at the right time and most partnerships became fruitful. That was the basis of our innings and we finished it off nicely."

Fleming praised Man of the Match Andre Adams, who made an important 25 not out and then took three for 13 after being entrusted with the new ball.

"When you have a player with exciting talents as he does, and they have confidence, that's when you're on to a winner.

"We're seeing that at the moment, and we'll see a lot more of it, I'm sure."
