The ceremony took place before Sussex played an Angus Fraser XI at Hove in a floodlit match to pay tribute to Rashid and his younger brother Burhan. The brothers drowned while swimming at a tourist spot during the club's pre-season tour of Grenada in April only 10 days after Ben Hollioake was killed in a car crash. Hollioake's brother Adam withdrew from Surrey's County Championship match against Hampshire in order to play in the match.
"When I first heard about the Rashid Memorial Match I knew I wanted to play," said Hollioake. "Thankfully with the title race out of the way I can now do this. "It's been a terrible year and these tragedies have brought our two families together. "I know how crucial support is at times like this and I'm glad to be representing the Hollioake family at this match." Part of the proceeds from the game will go towards life-saving equipment at Concord Falls in Grenada where the brothers drowned. A spin clinic based at Hove in Rashid's name is also to be established and the main scoreboard at Sussex's headquarters will carry his name and so act as another memorial. Six former internationals including Mike Gatting and Gladstone Small were in Fraser's team, representing Rashid's formative cricketing days as a young player on the Middlesex staff. Sussex's team symbolised his most successful years as a county cricketer.
Sultan Rashid, the 15-year-old brother of Umer and Burhan, also played wearing Umer's number 17. Sussex captain Chris Adams said: "One can only imagine what the Hollioake and Rashid families have gone through this year. "Both Surrey and Sussex have lost sons, brothers and friends. Our two clubs are linked forever and these integral members of our teams will never be forgotten. "The evening is to be a celebration of Umer and Burhan's lives and we will be honouring Ben as well. We are glad that Adam will be a part of it." |
