Frizzell County Championship Division One, day four, The Oval: Surrey 575-8 dec & 116-0; Sussex 308 & 379

Surrey (20 pts) beat Sussex (5 pts) by 10 wickets

Surrey duly knocked off the remaining runs they needed to wrap up a convincing 10-wicket victory over newly-promoted Sussex on another sun-baked day at the Oval.

Mark Butcher, one of the few England Test players in action for his county, made up for disappointment in the first innings by hitting 68 not out off just 64 balls, hitting 12 fours along the way.

Fellow left-hander Ian Ward was also undefeated on 43 when victory came with more than two sessions of the match unplayed.

On Sunday Chris Adams and Phillip Cottey had proved a thorn in Surrey's side as the Hove-based team staved off defeat in gritty fashion.

The top-order pair scored a century each to make the home side bat again after Sussex were made to follow on.

Adams and Cottey helped Sussex's second innings realise 379, moving them into a 112-run lead.

But Surrey's openers had alredy chipped 23 runs off the deficit before stumps, and Sussex knew they had little hope of preventing defeat on Monday.

England hopeful James Kirtley will be disappointed, however, that he failed to make a big impression in a high-profile match.

He took three for 122 in the first innings and none for 43 in eight overs second time around.

Ali Brown and Nadeem Shahid both hit centuries for Surrey in the first innings, with Alec Stewart making 99.
