| Friday, 31 January, 2003, 10:43 GMT Aussie Harrity joins Worcs ![]() Harrity has taken 197 first-class wickets Australian pace bowler Mark Harrity will play for Worcestershire as a domestic player next season after his agents reached agreement with English cricket authorities. Harrity, 28, recently took out a British passport as his father is English, but he will not be allowed to play for England at international level. The left-armer will miss the rest of his side South Australia's domestic season to meet England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) eligibility requirements. "I'm thrilled that Mark has decided to take up this opportunity at Worcestershire," said the county's director of cricket Tom Moody. "He will provide us with the left arm variation that we recently lost with Alamgir Sheriyar's departure to Kent. "Mark will also surprise not only opposition batsmen but many cricket followers with his genuine pace." Harrity, who has toured England with Australia A, has 197 first-class wickets at an average of 38.37 in nine seasons with the Redbacks. He joins Nantie Hayward in the New Road pace corps after the South African retired from international cricket to play for Worcestershire. "Mark is a big signing for Worcestershire, as he has genuine pace and is a left armer who swings the ball back into the right hander," said agent David Ligertwood. Harrity had hoped to play out the rest of the season with South Australia as an overseas player, but Adelaide administrators have so far refused to alter his registration. "It is a bit ridiculous as they're not fielding an overseas player at the moment," Ligertwood added. "But he may be able to return as an overseas player for the Redbacks, or another Australian side, next year." |
