Maddy makes Surrey pay
Adam Hollioake
Hollioake falls to Srinath as Surrey suffer a collapse
County Championship D1, The Oval, day two of four: Surrey 494 v Leicestershire 303-5

Darren Maddy struck a superb unbeaten century as Leicestershire capitalised on a Surrey batting collapse on day two at The Oval.

Surrey resumed the day in complete control on 397 for three, but Javagal Srinath bagged a five-wicket haul as the champions fell to 494 all out.

In reply, the visitors moved along to 303 for five with Maddy's 109 not out the highlight.

Veteran Phil DeFreitas, who took three wickets, got the ball rolling early for Leicestershire with the wicket of Nadeem Shahid.

England man Graham Thorpe looked in good touch in reaching 44, but former international DeFreitas again intervened to have him caught by Srinath.

Srinath then played a major part as Surrey capitulated, the former India paceman taking four wickets as the last five fell for just four runs.

It was a good effort to restrict Surrey to less than 500, and Leicestershire continued the good work to put on 60 for the first wicket.

Rookie right-hander Ashley Wright was the first to go when he edged fellow youngster Philip Sampson to Jonathan Batty behind the stumps.

Skipper Iain Sutcliffe put on 80 runs with Maddy before he fell to Ian Salisbury for 72.

Darren Stevens entertained in scoring 53 at better than a run-a-ball, but the visitors' day of dominance was checked somewhat when Surrey captain Adam Hollioake grabbed two wickets late in the day.

Nevertheless, Maddy - who struck 14 boundaries - remained unbeaten and will undoubtedly have more in store for Surrey on Friday.
