Knight lifts the gloom
Nick Knight
Fourth century of the summer for Nick Knight
County Championship, D1, Headingley: Yorkshire (6 points) 313 drew Warwickshire (4 points) 233 & 216

Nick Knight hit his fourth century of the season as Warwickshire denied Yorkshire their first win of the year in the county championship.

Warwickshire began their second innings 80 runs behind, but Knight's superb knock of 109 allowed the visitors to reach 216 for four before bad light forced an early end to play at Headingley.

Two wickets each by Richard Dawson and Gary Fellows gave the home supporters something to cheer about - but they are becoming increasingly resigned to the prospect of relegation into Division Two.

After taking an 80-run lead from the first innings, Yorkshire needed to dismiss Warwickshire cheaply to have any hope of setting up a run chase and the possibility of a long-awaited victory.

But Chris Silverwood and Chris Elstub failed to make any impact and off-spinner Dawson finally made a breakthrough when Michael Powell was bowled for 23.

England international Dawson struck again to account for Mark Wagh, bowled between bat and pad, but with Knight at the crease there was little chance of Warwickshire capitulating and he received solid support from Ian Bell.

The match had long been over as a contest when Knight and Bell completed their centuries and half-centuries respectively in the same over.

Bell reached his 50 on the first ball of the 69th over when he flicked a Fellows delivery off his legs to the fence at backward square leg, and three balls later Knight reached his 197-ball ton with an off drive.

It had been a superb innings by Knight, and he only offered one chance when he skied a catch to Chris Silverwood who failed to hold a difficult chance.

Knight's century was the signal for the left-hander to cut loose and the nexttwo deliveries were both smashed to the boundary in style, but two overs later Fellows gained revenge as Knight was caught by Vic Craven at cover.

Fellows dismissed Dominic Ostler later in the same over with a superb yorker before the weather put Yorkshire out of their misery.
