| Friday, 10 May, 2002, 15:20 GMT 16:20 UK Trescothick hammers Tykes ![]() Trescothick hit his 11th first-class ton County Championship, Taunton, day three of four: Somerset 232 & 263-3 beat Yorkshire 213 & 280 by seven wickets Somerset 16 points, Yorkshire 4 points England batsman Marcus Trescothick scored a classy century to consign reigning champions Yorkshire to their second successive defeat. Trescothick was at his powerful best, hitting 134 as Somerset reeled in their potentially difficult target in just 64.2 overs to record their first win of the Championship season. Yorkshire remain anchored to the foot of the Division One table after this seven-wicket loss, having been thrashed by an innings by Surrey in the opening round of matches. With the first Test against Sri Lanka looming, Trescothick is clearly in rude health. But while England fans will doubtless be warmed by the opener's knock, his 11th first-class century at Taunton was for Somerset and Somerset only. Disregard The left-hander looked likely to lead his county to victory from the outset, treating his England team-mates Chris Silverwood and Matthew Hoggard with disregard. He hit 18 boundaries and three sixes in his 177-ball knock, and benefitted from the support of veteran Peter Bowler, who contributed a valuable 79.
The pair shared in a 167-run stand for the third wicket after coming together with Somerset on 66 for two. The home side lost skipper Jamie Cox to Silverwood for 17 and Michael Burns to Hoggard for six, but Trescothick was always in ominous form at the other end. His dominance was evidenced by the fact Darren Lehmann called on eight bowlers, including himself, in an effort to turn the tide. Trescothick eventually fell to Richard Dawson with the total on 233 but victory was already in sight. Yorkshire had earlier failed to add to their overnight score of 280 for nine, with last man Hoggard becoming Andy Caddick's eighth victim of the match.
