| Saturday, 27 April, 2002, 17:48 GMT 18:48 UK Cork shocks Durham ![]() Dominic Cork was at his inspirational best County Championship D2, Derby: Derbyshire 263 & 229 (17 pts) beat Durham 258 & 232 (5pts) by two runs Dominic Cork blew away the Durham tail to give Derbyshire a dramatic win by just two runs at the Racecourse ground. Durham had been set for victory on 174 for two, chasing just 234 to win but they fell away in dramatic fashion to steal defeat from the jaws of victory. The visitors got off to a poor start with captain Jon Lewis falling to Cork early on. Martin Love could only manage 19 but a partnership of 114 between Jimmy Daley and Collingwood put the north-east side in charge. There was a sting in the tail for Durham though, as the innings began to unravel following Daley's departure injured with the score on 174 for two. Jason Kerr made the breakthrough for Derbyshire, removing Nicky Peng for just nine and Collingwood for 76.
Gordon Muchall and Andy Pratt appeared to have settled things down for Durham taking them on to 211 for four but Derbyshire debutant Syed Mohammad Ali removed them both to send shivers through the Durham camp. Cork then returned to pick up Bridge for one but Durham still seemed well set as Neil Killeen and Mark Davies nursed them to within three runs of the target. Ever the man for the big occasion, Cork stirred himself once more dismissing Killeen but with Daley returning to the crease Durham were still favourites. However, Daley was unable to get the strike, leaving Cork with a full over at Davies. With his first-ball he had Davies caught by Luke Sutton and with his second he repeated the trick to new man Steve Harmison, picking up his fifth wicket in capping a remarkable win. Durham had been frustrated in the morning by a last-wicket partnership of 61 between Kevin Dean and Lian Wharton. Dean, whose previous first-class best was just 27, completed his maiden half-century before finally being dismissed by Collingwood with the score on 229.
